It’s time to celebrate a very big birthday! - When the beer can made its first public appearance in sleepy Richmond, VA in January 1935, no one could begin to imagine the impact this nondescript metal cylinder would have on cultures and industries around the world. Back then American Can was supplying the G. Krueger Brewing Company with 180,000 cans a day. Today, a single production line can churn out 2,400 cans a minute.

What’ll ya have, Mr. President? - CANvention 39 will be remembered for a long time to come, just like President Lincoln, who surprised guests with an appearance during the 75th Anniversary of the Beer Can Kick-Off on Wednesday night. Lincoln is recreated here by professional actor and scholar Fritz Klein, who resides in Springfield, IL. Klein has portrayed Lincoln in over a dozen documentaries and films.

In honor of the aluminum can's fiftieth birthday, read how Bill Coors turned a proposal from a fast-talking dealmaker into an innovation that would change the packaging and brewing industries forever.
